Unicel got it's start on an important evening back in 1956. Company president and founder, Dick Meissner, was asked by Phil Anthony of Anthony Pools to design and create the Anthony McIntosh filter bag. That fateful night was the launching point for a company that would soon become the largest producer of spa and swimming pool filter elements in the world. In that era DE filters were still in their first stages of being produced. With the arrival of the cartridge filter, his company realized its next opening. The first cartridge elements were made from a paper-like material that would not hold up well in an aqueous surrounding. Visualizing the possibilities for cartridge filtration, Meissner decided to generate a assembling technique to amplify this new instrument. Finally in 1964, their research and development put out the industry's very first cartridge element created from a new spunbonded, 100% polyester substance called Reemay. Reemay is now the leading filter material in then spa and pool industry.
